ArcelorMittal Calvert Launches New Meltshop to Boost U.S. Steel Output

ArcelorMittal Calvert, the U.S.-based arm of global steelmaker ArcelorMittal, has officially commissioned a new greenfield meltshop at its Alabama facility, significantly expanding domestic steel production for the automotive and industrial sectors. The project underscores the company’s commitment to strengthening U.S. manufacturing capacity and reducing reliance on imports.

With an annual production capacity of 1.5 million metric tons, the meltshop is equipped with cutting-edge technology supplied by Spanish engineering firm Sarralle. The facility features a 180-metric-ton electric arc furnace, a twin ladle furnace of the same capacity, a continuous casting machine, a degasser unit, comprehensive material handling infrastructure, and an advanced fume treatment system.

This development marks a major milestone in ArcelorMittal Calvert’s long-term growth strategy, aligning with broader efforts to enhance the sustainability and resilience of North America’s steel supply chain. The new meltshop positions the Alabama site as a more vertically integrated operation, enabling the company to meet rising domestic demand for high-quality, locally produced steel while also supporting cleaner and more efficient manufacturing processes.

The investment is expected to create new jobs, stimulate regional economic development, and reinforce ArcelorMittal’s role in the evolving landscape of U.S. steelmaking.
