The Brazilian foreign trade chamber, CAMEX, has extended the 25 percent import tariff and maintained the quota system for finished steel products for another 12 months. The updated policy increases the number of steel product families subject to quotas from 19 to 23, incorporating additional product categories.
The newly included products consist of steel wire and flat products of special steel grades, which had previously been used by importers to circumvent the higher tariff rates at customs. This adjustment aims to close loopholes and strengthen trade protections for domestic steel producers.
The tariff and quota system already applies to various steel products, including different grades of plates in coils, hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils, zinc-coated steel, Galvalume, wire rod, rebar, and seamed piping. The expansion underscores Brazil's ongoing efforts to regulate steel imports and safeguard its industrial sector from foreign competition.
While CAMEX has not yet disclosed the specific volume limits for the new quotas, an official announcement is expected soon, as the current quotas are set to expire on May 31. The decision reinforces Brazil’s commitment to managing steel imports through tariff measures and controlled market access.
