India Emerges as Global Leader in Green Steel Transition

India is rapidly positioning itself as the most promising steel producer in the global shift toward greener industrial practices. Despite modest export volumes and continued reliance on imported finished steel, India’s steelmaking growth rate far outpaces that of the other top 10 steel-producing nations. This surge is driven by robust domestic demand in the world’s fifth-largest economy, which has helped stabilize global steel consumption amid broader economic uncertainty.

However, India’s steel industry currently emits 2.54 tons of CO₂ per ton of steel produced—well above the global average of 1.91 tons—highlighting a significant opportunity for emissions reduction. Recognizing this, India has taken a pioneering step by introducing the world’s first state-level ecological classification for steel. This regulatory framework marks a critical milestone in the country’s green transition, setting clear standards for sustainable production and encouraging innovation in low-emission technologies.

With its combination of strong market fundamentals and a proactive regulatory approach, India is uniquely positioned to lead the global steel sector into a more sustainable future. The ecological classification initiative not only enhances transparency but also lays the groundwork for India to become a benchmark for green steel production worldwide.
